About the Item

Exhibition-Quality Japanese Shrine Cabinet – Meiji Period, ca. 1880–1900 A rare and important multi-tiered Buddhist shrine cabinet, constructed in pagoda form and richly decorated in carved hardwood, lacquer, gilt, and inlaid panels of bone, and mother-of-pearl. The cabinet is arranged in two levels, each with hinged doors opening to reveal finely worked gilt and lacquer interiors. The panels are delicately inlaid with birds, butterflies, and seasonal flowers such as iris and wisteria, while larger gilt medallions depict Buddhist figures including Kannon (Guanyin) standing on clouds. The structure is further enhanced with balustrades, latticework, and dragon-head corner carvings, all set upon a massive base carved with fierce dragon masks. Scale Presence – Standing as a true centerpiece, this cabinet transcends the category of decorative art, merging sculpture, architecture, and religious devotion. Prestigious provenance. The original brass dealer plate is present, inscribed: “KUHN KIMURA – Singapore / Hongkong / Shanghai / Kobe”, identifying the firm as one of the foremost Meiji-period exporters of high-quality Japanese decorative art to the international market.
