About the Item

This is a very fine Ikebana basket from the late 19th century / early 20th century . The Japanese art of flower arranging is a highly ritualised process and this basket would have been used to create very elaborate displays. The piece is woven from treated slender strips of bamboo of the highest quality and woven to provide a beautifully delicate but strong basket. As stated the piece would date from the late 19th century and is signed by the master craftsman who created the piece . Accompanying the piece is the original water container carved from one piece of specially chosen bamboo. Given the high standard of workmanship and quality of materials this would indicate the pieve would have been owned by an individual of high status.
