A fine and rare Japanese black lacquer table or jewellery cabinet, exquisitely decorated in intricate detail, dating to the late Meiji period, late 19th century. Why we like it This table cabinet is an exquisite example of Japanese decorative art from the Meiji era. Not only is it visually striking, but it also serves as a practical storage option for small objects or jewellery. Luxurious items like this were highly prized in England and continental Europe during the height of the chinoiserie trend. Fine pieces such as lacquerware, botanical paintings, and reverse-painted glass were produced in Canton for the European market, catering to the fascination with exotic Eastern craftsmanship. Condition Presented in very good antique condition, retaining its original decoration. Minor touch-ups have been made at some point, but they do not detract from the overall fine appearance.
