About the Item

This Japanese antique low table features a scattered fan motif and is a type of zataku (low table), historically used for meals, tea ceremonies, and other seated activities. Lacquereare is a traditional artistic Japanese craft that involves applying layers of lacquer to a base material, in this case, wood. The decorative technique used on this table, which involves sprinkling metal powder onto wet lacquer, is known as maki-e. This technique is one of the most common for high-quality Japanese lacquerware. Some pieces may also incorporate other decorative methods, such as raden, which uses mother-of-pearl inlay. This table features many handpainted fans in various positions around the edges of the top. The materials used for the lacquer come from the sap of the urushi tree, and the process is known for creating a durable, waterproof, and heat-resistant finish. The table's design, with its fan motif, is a classic element in Japanese art and is often found on lacquerware pieces and on Japanese screens.
