About the Item

This delicate cup from the late 19th century is a lovely example of the Burmese art of lacquer (pan yun). Shaped from coiled bamboo and finished with cinnabar-red lacquer (hinthabada), the small bowl is decorated in the manner of 'yun ware' engraving, hand-etched with intricate linework and filled with pigments of orange, gold. Horizontal bands of lines and dots pattern the exterior, accented with subtle motifs of floral and fauna. The touch of many hands has richly aged the lacquer finish, imparting a soft patina that calls to be touched. Minor splits to lacquer.
