About the Item
Designer's Note:
Luminous Centerpiece: The mirror-like black lacquer and the radiant gold/silver petals create a stunning visual contrast. This box serves as a sophisticated focal point for a coffee table, a vanity, or a collector's display cabinet.
Symbolism of Resilience: In East Asian culture, the chrysanthemum symbolizes purity, longevity, and the "integrity of a scholar." It is an auspicious and thoughtful gift for meaningful occasions.
Modern Zen Aesthetic: While the techniques are ancient, the bold, full-bloom composition feels strikingly modern. It fits perfectly in Contemporary Asian, Art Deco, or Japandi interiors.
The Story:
This exquisite lacquer box by master artist Hsien Min Wang captures the serene beauty of autumn through the motif of a chrysanthemum in full bloom. Shaped using advanced molded lacquer techniques, the box is a canvas for a complex interplay of Polished Maki-e (Togidashi) and Chinkin (Gold Inlay). Each petal overlaps in radiant tones of gold, silver, and color pigments, creating a luminous surface that seems to glow from within.
Wang's work is a dialogue between tradition and innovation. As the son of the legendary lacquer master Ching Shuang Wang, Hsien Min Wang integrates traditional raised maki-e with contemporary lacquer painting. The deep, mirror-like black ground serves to accentuate the vivid hues of the chrysanthemum, evoking a sense of tranquility and high refinement. Every stroke and gold grain reflects decades of mastery, infusing this classical East Asian art form with new, vibrant life.
