About the Item
This magnificent hibachi (charcoal brazier), likely custom-made to order, exemplifies the pinnacle of Japanese lacquer artistry of the 19th century. Carved from solid wood with a rich natural grain, the surface is adorned with an exquisite maki-e (蒔絵) decoration depicting large blooming poppies, their petals rendered in brilliant gold and delicate silver powders. The floral composition is dynamic yet graceful, with fine gradations of metallic pigment and raised texture enhancing the naturalistic elegance of each leaf and bud.
Originally used as an indoor heating vessel, today such hibachi are prized as decorative centerpieces or repurposed as unique planters or vessels in refined interiors. This example is particularly rare for its subject matter and the superb quality of its lacquer and makie work.
Condition: Excellent antique condition with minimal wear; retains its original inner lining.
Provenance: Private collection, Japan
An extraordinary example of functional art that bridges craftsmanship, seasonal symbolism, and the Japanese love for refined natural beauty.
