About the Item

“Flower and Flower” by Kobayashi Miyako is a radiant lacquer serving dish shaped like a blossoming flower. The vivid red palette and lively form immediately convey energy and joy. Inside the dish, camellia motifs radiate from a raised central element resembling a stamen, creating the impression of a flower within a flower. This layered composition adds depth and playfulness while highlighting the symbolic warmth and celebratory spirit of the camellia. Kobayashi combines lacquer and maki-e techniques with exceptional finesse. Delicate gold lines and fine detailing enhance the dish’s rich colors, giving it both charm and elegance. Whether used to present fruit, wagashi, or small objects, or simply displayed as an interior accent, the piece brings brightness and a festive atmosphere to any setting. Up close, its craftsmanship reveals a thoughtful balance of creativity, precision, and warmth. This work is one of Kobayashi Miyako’s representative creations, expressing her characteristic blend of imagination and refined technique. It carries a sense of blessing and joy, making it ideal for both daily enjoyment and as a collectible piece of contemporary Japanese lacquer art. Kobayashi Miyako first trained in Japanese painting under Ono Tokutaro in 1960 and entered the field of lacquer arts in 1976 under Kawai Kunio. She later studied with lacquer master Taguchi Yoshikuni and became a member of the Japan Kogei Association Tokyo Branch in 1981. Kobayashi passed the First-Class Maki-e Artisan Certification in both 1993 and 2010, demonstrating exceptional technical mastery. Her work has been selected for major exhibitions including the Traditional Crafts Musashino Exhibition, the Traditional Crafts New Works Exhibition, and the Japan Traditional Lacquer Art Exhibition. She has held the Sannokai Lacquer Art Exhibition as well as multiple solo shows. Known for her warm, creative style and finely detailed technique, she is regarded as one of the notable contemporary female lacquer artists in Japan.
