About the Item

A vintage Japanese Tsuzuri bako, writing box. with an unusual, deeply carved relief of Japanese sarcandra glabra, a woody herbal sub-shrub native to Asia with deep green glossy leaves and red berry like fruit. Kamakura lacquerware is primarily made by carving the design into wood before lacquering in red and black. The colour combination used here is unusual, the lacquer layers having been sanded back to reveal a depth of colour range which accentuates the three dimensional design. The box comes with it's own storage box, signed and sealed by the artist Tamerou Ono (1927-1981).
