About the Item

Antique five tier Japanese lacquered wooden stacking box, known as a jubako. It is finished with a traditional technique called Tsugaru-nuri, specifically the kara-nuri pattern, which is known for its complex, speckled appearance. The interior of each tier is finished in bright red lacquer. The beautiful distinctive organic pattern is achieved through a multi-step process involving applying, drying, and polishing numerous layers of colored lacquer, which is in tones of brown, black, gold and green. There are hundreds of tiny iridescent shell chips inlaid in the lacquer. The extensive layering process makes the lacquerware very durable and practical for daily use. Jubako are traditionally used for serving food, especially osechi ryori (traditional Japanese New Year's food), but can also be used for storage.
