About the Item
A Japanese Nagamochi trunk is a traditional storage chest used for centuries to store clothing, bedding, and other household items.
This piece dates to the Edo period (1603-1868), c. 1850 and is finished in black lacquer with elaborate carvings and a prominent red crest or 'mon'. The crests are family, crests, and are surrounded by dark green vines in raised lacquer.
These chests were essential for storing valuable family possessions, clothing, and even a bride's trousseau.
At each end, there is a large U-shaped handle, and these could be carried by lifting the handles upward and putting a large pole through both so that they could be carried at both ends by two people.
Nagamochi translates roughly to "long storage". Many were designed to be portable, often constructed from light kiri (paulownia) wood and fitted with handles for transport. Some were even designed to sit on a wheeled cart (kuruma nagamochi).
While functional, elaborately decorated and finely lacquered chests often indicated the high status of the owners, sometimes featuring the family crests of prominent clans.
They are typically rectangular with a hinged lid and were constructed with finger joints and reinforced with metal hardware. The domed or convex top helped prevent water damage during travel and also made them harder to stack, ensuring they were not crushed.
The inside is simple, with just one large compartment.
