About the Item
Wajima-lacquer kobako in grey lacquer, decorated with gold-lacquer stripes forming a bivalve shell motif. The interior is finished in nashiji lacquer on a black ground.
Wajima lacquer, one of Japan’s most prestigious lacquer traditions, originates from the city of Wajima on the northwestern coast of the Noto Peninsula. This highly esteemed craft, which has flourished since the Edo period (1603–1868), is renowned for the richness of its base layers and its refined decorative techniques—hallmarks of both aesthetic excellence and exceptional durability.
With its remarkable production process, sumptuous lacquer, and exquisite ornamentation, Wajima lacquer embodies the fascinating artistry of this region. Designated an Important Intangible Cultural Property in 1975, Wajima lacquerware continues to evolve with elegance while preserving the depth of its ancestral traditions.

Antique Japanese Inro by Shigehide Edo Period

This exquisite four-case lacquered inro was dated to the latter part of 18th century to early 19th century (Edo period) and made by Shigehide. The opposite sides of the inro together features a lavish flower arrangement in a bamboo basket (ikebana). The detailed craftmanship was a true pleasure to behold. Mostly Takamaki-e (high relief) were used to texturize the delicate petals of the chrysanthemums, on which different shades of gold were used to create contrast. Raden (mother of pearl) shells were also used to highlight some leaves, rendering the piece an interesting balance of color and material. The interior was completed in a mottled gold finish.
