About the Item
A rare and elegant set of three Japanese hibachi (traditional fire bowls) from the Meiji period (1868–1912), made of richly grained paulownia wood and intricately decorated with carved and inlaid motifs of paulownia branches and leaves.
Each hibachi showcases exceptional craftsmanship, with a smooth, rounded form carved from solid wood and adorned with hand-applied gold-toned leaf motifs. Several leaves are further enhanced with shimmering raden (mother-of-pearl) or lacquer inlay, adding delicate contrast and depth to the natural beauty of the wood grain. The botanical design, inspired by the paulownia tree—a traditional symbol of resilience and prosperity in Japanese culture—wraps gracefully around the body of each vessel.
Originally used for holding ash and charcoal to provide heat, hibachi such as these were often repurposed during the late Meiji period for other elegant domestic uses, including flower arranging (ikebana) or as unique planters.
This set is preserved in excellent condition, with no damage or restoration. A rare opportunity to acquire a matching trio—ideal for display in a refined interior or collector’s cabinet.
