About the Item

This Showa period lacquer vase by Inami Tadashi presents an elegant blend of traditional craftsmanship and modern abstraction. Bands of gold, silver, red, and muted tones flow around the surface in a rhythmic pattern, creating a lively sense of movement. Although compact in size, the vase has a strong sculptural presence due to its rounded form and refined matte surface, which feels smooth and warm to the touch. The color harmony is vibrant yet sophisticated, offering a fresh interpretation of classic lacquer pigments. Crafted in Wajima, the work reflects the region’s renowned durability and meticulous technique. Wajima lacquerware is built through more than one hundred steps, including the application of local diatomaceous earth mixed with raw lacquer to create a reinforced base layer. This vase features both maki-e and chinkin techniques, with delicate engraved lines and precisely layered colors that demonstrate a high level of technical mastery. Creating a small vessel with such accuracy requires exceptional control and experience. Inami Tadashi (1923–2011) was born into a distinguished Kaga maki-e family in Kanazawa. He trained at the Tokyo Fine Arts School Craft Institute and studied under important artists such as Yamazaki Kakutaro, Kato Hajime, and Tomimoto Kenkichi. After mastering Kaga maki-e under his father, he built a prominent career focused on Nitten and Japan Contemporary Crafts exhibitions. His works, known for their abstract and modern sensibility, received major honors including the Prime Minister’s Award and the Japan Art Academy Award. Inami also played a significant role in the advancement of Wajima lacquer through his long service as director of the Wajima Lacquerware Research Institute. His works are held in major museum collections and are valued for their innovative approach to lacquer art.
