About the Item
An exquisite Japanese Meiji Period small lacquer incense box, kogo, in the form of a duck or goose, late 19th century, Japan.
The delicate lacquer box, known as a kogo in Japanese, was originally used to hold precious incense.
Finely crafted out of lacquer, the box is in the form of a recumbent duck or goose, seemingly floating on the water. The waterfowl displays an attractive silhouette, with its neck raised and head craned back, gazing upwards. The bird's wings held tight against its plump body.
The individual feathers of the wings are impeccably picked out in gold and silver hiramaki-e, or low relief lacquer, upon a solid pale gold lacquer ground.
The interior and underside of the kogo finished in a very fine nashiji, or gold dust sprinkled lacquer. The interior of the box exceptionally bright.
