About the Item

An old suzuribako, or writing box, in black lacquer with a faceted lid and featuring, as its sole decoration in the lower left section, a moonlight scene emerging from tall grasses. The moon is rendered through the addition of metallic salts such as iron, silver, or oxidized tin, sprinkled onto the fresh lacquer. The grasses are depicted with great delicacy using hira maki-e gold lacquer, which time has barely worn away. The tall grasses appear to be miscanthus, a grass commonly found in Japan and well known for its frequent use in the traditional Japanese floral art of ikebana. Their colors evoke the shimmer of nocturnal light.The inner edge of the box is finished in nashiji lacquer. It includes its inkstone, which also bears remains of nashiji lacquer, and its suiteki (water dropper), made from copper leaves and is shaped like a small rectangular teapot. Tebako box with three compartments in golden and nashi-ji lacquer, decorated with golden, red, and kirigane lacquer, golden persimmon tree leaves, among rocks. The compartments are of increasing size from the top. The decoration is in continuity. Persimmon has been cultivated in southern China for more than 2500 years and is believed to have been introduced to Japan in the 8th century. The veneer is a tree with very hard wood, similar to ebony. According to a legend, one specimen survived the atomic bombing of Nagasaki on August 9, 1945, close to the epicenter.
