About the Item

A finely decorated vintage Japanese box for precious incense, kogo, in the shape of a male mandarin duck, oshidori, by Zohiko, Showa Era, 1960's, or earlier. The lovely and whimsical box formed as a male oshidori, mandarin duck. The duck is beautifully decorated, with silver lacquer feathers gracefully picked out against a gold lacquer ground. The neck and wing feathers of gold lacquer against a red orange lacquer ground. The head with beautiful shading of gold, black, and red lacquer. The eyes intense and lifelike. The hollowed interior decorated with beautiful nashiji (pear skin) lacquer. More nashiji to the underside. The underside also with a two character "elephant" mark for Zohiko, one of the oldest and most respected lacquer factories retailers in Kyoto, founded in 1661 during the early Edo Period. Kogo are special boxes meant to hold precious incense, and are key parts of the incense ceremony. Provenance: Ruth Nelkin Collection (1927 - 2022)
