About the Item

This rare 11th-century West Tibetan bronze Bodhisattva, cast in an early four-armed Himalayan iconographic form, is a powerful and evocative survival from the formative period of Tibetan Buddhist sculpture. Executed in a confident and well-balanced manner, the figure reflects the aesthetic language of early Western Tibetan workshops, where Indian Pala influences were adapted into a distinctive regional style characterized by strong proportions, expressive gestures, and restrained ornamentation. The surface of the bronze is deeply aged and entirely authentic, with softened contours, natural mineral accretions, and areas of gentle wear that suggest the sculpture may have remained buried or stored undisturbed for a prolonged period. This long-term preservation has allowed the patina to develop evenly and organically, resulting in a surface that is both visually compelling and highly convincing to the seasoned eye. The modeling remains crisp beneath the wear, particularly in the face, crown, and hands, attesting to the quality of the original casting. Multi-armed Bodhisattva bronzes from this early period are exceptionally scarce, especially in such honest, untouched condition. Mounted on a newly crafted museum-style custom base, this sculpture presents securely and elegantly. A significant and desirable example of early Himalayan art, it would be an important addition to any collection of Tibetan, Buddhist, or early Asian sculpture.
