Japanese Cloisonne Turquoise Ground Crane Frenzy Plate Attributed to Hayashi
Located in Long Island City, NY
An antique Japanese, Meiji era, enamel over copper plate or charger attributed to Hayashi Kodenji, Japanese, 1831 to 1915. Circa 1890. The plate has an octagonal form. The interior of the plate is enameled with a polychrome image of cranes on the turquoise ground made in the Cloisonne technique. The backside is decorated with a foliate scroll ornament on the turquoise ground made in the same technique. Hayashi Kodenji was a pivotal figure in the history of Cloisonne enamel manufacturer. He was instrumental in the formation and leadership of the Shippo cho enamellers guild, and it is probable that he worked for the Nagoya-based Shippo Kaisha. He exhibited and won prizes at many international exhibitions: Nuremberg 1885 Silver, Paris 1889 Silver...
