About the Item
Antique Chinese Bai-tong Hand Warmer. The large rectangular bun form has a hinged overhead handle and filigree pierced lid in a hexagonal pattern. The solid sides has engraved decoration of flower medallions alternating with butterflies between foliate bands. Bai-tong (Paktong) also known as German silver or nickel silver is crafted of an alloy of white copper (50% copper, 25% nickel and 25% zinc) and is often polished resembling silver. Hand warmers, also known as sleeve censers (xiulu), are considered a luxury personal accessory. The container would hold a smoldering charcoal brick embedded in sand and ash which provided welcome warmth in unheated rooms. Incense was often added to impart a pleasant fragrance.
