About the Item

Antique Chinese Mixed Metal and Enamel Opium Box. An oval form in three parts consisting of a paktong container with smooth sides and makers mark impressed on the base, a tight fitting paktong lid with a detailed brass bat (symbol of happiness) in relief on the top and an outer decorative sleeve in fine chased repoussé silver depicting the symbols of the Chinese eight immortals (sword, flute, flower basket, fan, gourd, castanets, lotus blossom and bamboo tube) on a stippled ground within a cartouche, four symbols to each side, further decorated in colored enamels (yellow, blue and black) bordered with key fret brass bands and bat shaped cutout on the top. Signs of wear from use, chips to the enamels, otherwise fine condition. Measurements: 1.5 in. high x 1.5625 in. wide x 0.75 in. deep (38 x 40 x 19mm). Weight: 1.8 oz. (52 g.) Circa 1850. Provenance: Private Collection, Bangkok Note: Opium paste needs to be in an airtight container. The paste can dry out easily and thus a double lid container such as this was ideal for containing a personal use amount of the paste suitable for consuming by burning in an opium pipe. The bat in relief on the lid is a simple way of pushing the box out from the outer sleeve. The symbols of happiness and immortality depicted are the desirable sensory qualities to achieve by using the drug. A beautiful well crafted box such as this would have been used by the most discerning of opium users.
