About the Item
This colorful striking pair of antique Japanese bronze vases from the Meiji period are decorated with enamel using the cloisonne technique. Two matched vases with a relief pattern of cloisonne enamel, making up a set. The entire surface of each vase is decorated with a complex floral and leaf pattern of white, gold and orange colors on a cobalt blue background. Note the delicate border at the bottom in light blue and pink lotus. The meiping shape was first made of stoneware during the Tang dynasty (618–907). It was originally used as a wine vessel, but since the Song dynasty (960–1279) it also became popular as a plum vase and got its name "meiping".
Unmarked. Meiji era, 1868 to 1912, reign of Emperor Mutsuhito.
On wooden pedestals- overall stand 9.5 inches. Bottoms measure 2.5 inches across- tops 1.75 inches across- vases standing alone 8 inches.
