About the Item

These are an excellent matching pair of large antique Chinese Foo or lion dog sculptures, sometimes called temple lions or Shishi, made of bronze with fine detail, hand enameled and gilded dating to the 18th century, Qing period or earlier. These are a very beautiful matching pair of large Bronze Chinese sculptures. They have hand painted enamel detail with colours of red and a turquoise blue as well as hand gilding. These are the best pair we have ever handled, with superb intricate detail to the finished bronze castings. We have dated them to the 18th Century but they could well be earlier back to the Ming dynasty. They are a matching male and female pair, individually cast in fine detail, the male being larger with a brocade ball under his left hand paw, the female holding a cub under her right hand paw, all in keeping with Chinese tradition. The figures have open mouths, typical of Chinese Foo dogs. These pieces are very well hand cast, with excellent detail to all aspects of the figures. There is wear to to the high points, the base of the feet and some loss of gilding and hand painted detail as per the images. These are a very substantial pair with a combined unpacked weight of nearly 8 Kg. making them very heavy for their size. Dimensions: Male: 11 W x 7.4 D x 7.4 H inches, weighing 4.1 Kg Female: 10.4 W x 5.8 D x 7 H inches, weighing 3.75 Kg Overall a lovely pair of antique Chinese foo dogs with fine detail, which we date to the 18th century, Qing period or earlier. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Chinese Foo Dogs Foo dogs, also known as Shishi, first appeared in China during the Han Dynasty, approximately 208 BC to 221 AD. They were depicted in Chinese art and were believed to protect sacred sites and ward off evil spirits. After a period of decline, they returned in the T'ang Dynasty (618–917 AD) and became a prominent feature in Chinese culture and architecture, right through till today. Foo dogs are symbolic, protective statues, and they are designed in pairs — one is female, the other is male. The female represents yin, and symbolically protects the people dwelling inside the home, while the male statue, representing yang, protects the structure itself. The brocade ball, held by the larger male represents control of the world, power and dominance, with the cub held by the female representing nurturing, motherhood and family within the home.
