About the Item

A wonderful large Southeast Asian Bronze Temple vessel. It is a heavy cast bronze ceremonial vessel of impressive scale, the lobed body encircled by repeated reliefs of a stylized Garuda—the mythical bird-man and mount of Vishnu—standing frontally with outspread wings and long trailing plumes. The broad flared rim is banded with scrolling cloud-like motifs and lotus-derived blossoms, above a softly waisted neck and bulbous, melon-ribbed body. The bronze shows a rich, mottled surface with areas of warm brown and dark graphite patina, interspersed with patches of old verdigris and wear from long use. The interior and underside retain thick, untouched oxidation consistent with age and outdoor or temple use. A striking sculptural object that works beautifully as a planter, jardinière, or standalone temple form in a modern interior. Age-appropriate wear, scattered abrasions and surface accretions, expected verdigris and encrustation inside, minor casting imperfections, including a crack near near the base and small losses and knocks along the lower rim—all typical for a heavy ritual bronze of this period and use, and contributing to the character of the piece.
