About the Item
A beautifully sculpted bronze vase by renowned Japanese metal artist Yasumi II Nakajima (1905–1986), celebrated for his mastery of patination and abstract form. This elegant vessel embodies the refined minimalism of modern Japanese metalwork, with a slender silhouette and soft, warm surface tones developed through expert use of traditional techniques.
Born in Osaka as the son of Nakajima Yasumi I — founder of the Osaka Craft Group — Yasumi II was formally trained at the National School of Industrial Art in Sendai. His work was exhibited internationally from an early stage, including at the Exports Craft Exhibition in Japan and the Grand Salon in Paris. From 1939 onward, he became a regular exhibitor at Japan’s most prestigious government-sponsored salons, including the Shin-Bunten and the Nitten, where he received numerous awards.
The Nitten Exhibition, established in 1907 by Japan’s Imperial Ministry of Education, remains the country’s most prestigious annual art exhibition. Participation is reserved for leading artists across disciplines, and inclusion is a mark of national recognition and excellence.
This signed work stands 22 cm (8.5 in) tall with a diameter of 6 cm (2.5 in), and weighs 430 g (1 lb). It comes housed in its original signed wooden box. The surface exhibits minor natural patination consistent with age and authenticity — please refer to photos.
An exceptional example of 20th-century Japanese bronze artistry, ideal for collectors and connoisseurs of modern Japanese design.
