About the Item
A delightful and well painted antique Chinese Canton enamel box and cover featuring two boys catching flying insects dating from the Qing Dynasty. The delightful box is of circular form and is made in copper and beautifully overlaid with famille rose enamels. The box sits raised on a narrow round copper rimmed foot with a slightly recessed base and overlaid with white enamels. The base is of shallow wide round form with a shaped copper upper rim over which the cover sits neatly. The inner and outer bowl are decorated in white enamels with the outer bowl hand-painted with scroll and floral patterns set above a linear and pattern border and painted in blue, red and green tones. The cover is of domed shape with a flatter top with an exposed copper rim and again applied inside and out with white enamels. The cover has been painted with floral and scroll pattern in panels around the edge which match the base and with a similar linear border separating this from the main scene on the top of the cover. This delightful scene is well painted and portrays two children in a garden scene with a net and trying to catch a flying insect. Painted in traditional Chinese style the scene combines many colors in many tones. The box also has a red four-character Qianlong mark to the base and while this may be original to the period the box dates from the 18th or 19th century and certainly within the Qing Dynasty.

An unusual and fine antique Chinese Qing lacquered and inlaid papier mache handled sewing box with decorative panels dating from latter 19th or early 20th century. The sewing box is of round cylindrical shape with a swing carry handle and is inlaid with mother of pearl and abalone.
