Cloisonné or honeycomb enamel is an ancient technique for decorating metal objects, in recent centuries through the use of glazed enamel, and in ancient times through the use of inlays of precious stones, glass and other materials. Objects treated with this technique are sometimes called cloisonné. To make the decoration, alveoli or compartments are first added to the metal object by welding or adhering silver or gold wires or thin ribbons placed on its edges. These aggregates are visible in the finished piece, serving as a separation between the numerous enamel compartments or inlays, which are often of various colors.
