About the Item
A stylish vintage Chinese Republic period cloisonne mounted brass casket or box dating from around 1920-30. The heavily made quality casket is of rectangular shape with a hinged cover with a swing latch attached to the front edge. The box is lined in wood and the box has a simple scale patterning to the surface of the box set within a panel border and the lid is applied with a buckle shaped cloisonne mounted brass design to the centre of the lid with small cloisonne roundels applied to the four corners. Further small roundels of varying size are applied around the front three edges and inset with cloisonne designs to the front two and with blue colored enamels to the side panels. With incised patterning to the latch the box is marked MADE IN CHINA to the base. A good quality period example.
Provenance: Acquired from the UK Art Market.
In good presentable condition with wear and polish residue associated with age and use. There are some old solder repairs along the back hinge and we believe the inner lid has lost its original wood lining.

An unusual and fine antique Chinese Qing lacquered and inlaid papier mache handled sewing box with decorative panels dating from latter 19th or early 20th century. The sewing box is of round cylindrical shape with a swing carry handle and is inlaid with mother of pearl and abalone. The body is made up of eight oval shaped scenes of typical Chinese style with buildings and people picked out with inset abalone and mother of pearl and highlighted and contained within a gilded border.
