About the Item
A remarkable Buddha’s head dating from the 17th to 18th century, originating from the historic Ayutthaya Kingdom in Thailand. This larger-sized sculpture exhibits a terrific aged patina, reflecting centuries of reverence and history.
Accompanied by an early block stand, this original base is particularly desirable among collectors. Unlike later decorative stands, these early block stands were customarily placed on the sculptures at the time of discovery, adding authenticity and historical context to the piece.
The Ayutthaya period (1350–1767) was a flourishing era in Thai history, marked by a synthesis of influences from Sukhothai, Khmer, and Sri Lankan Buddhist art traditions. Artistic works from this period are known for their elegant stylization, graceful facial expressions, and spiritual serenity.
Typical iconographic features of Ayutthaya Buddha sculptures include a serene smile, elongated earlobes, and stylized hair curls, all symbolizing enlightenment and spiritual wisdom. The Buddha’s head embodies these qualities with refined craftsmanship, offering a profound expression of meditative calm and divine presence.
This piece represents a significant artifact of Southeast Asian religious art, evoking both historical depth and spiritual reverence, making it a treasured addition to any collection of Asian antiquities.
