About the Item
A refined Japanese cloisonne enamel plate by Goto Seizaburo, one of the most distinctive enamel artists active in Yokohama during the late Meiji period. The plate is composed in an elegant collage of fan shaped panels, each filled with finely executed motifs including floral sprays, butterflies, stylized waves, and a series of exceptionally intricate geometric grounds inspired by classical Japanese textiles.
The geometric panels correspond closely to those on a documented Goto plate in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. The V and A example, acquired directly from the artist in the early 1880s, provides an authoritative point of comparison. The reverse of the present plate is arranged in the same structure as the museum piece, reinforcing its place firmly within Goto’s established oeuvre.
At the center appears the Tokugawa mon. Goto is historically associated with the Tokugawa lineage and is known to have incorporated the crest as an expression of identity and heritage. Its presence further strengthens the attribution and highlights the personal dimension of the work.
This plate displays the hallmarks of Goto’s finest production. The wire work is exceptionally precise, the geometric patterning is crisp and balanced, and the enamel surfaces are beautifully preserved with deep, even firing. A rare and important example for collectors of high level Meiji period Japanese cloisonne enamel.
