A Fine Pair of Japanese Cloisonné-Enamel Vases with Swallows and Parrots
Meiji period
Each of square shape with rounded shoulders, rising to a slightly waisted neck and flaring mouth, supported on a splayed foot, finely worked in coloured enamels and silver wire on a turquoise ground. One side decorated with swallows in flight above flowering prunus, peony and rose; the reverse with a white parrot perched on a bough of hibiscus or camellia. Further embellished with chrysanthemums, butterflies and seasonal foliage. The neck and foot rims applied with scalloped gilt metal mounts; the interior and base with plain polished metal .
Size: H- 17.5 cm, W-10 cm, diameter to the bottom 5.5 cm
Condition: Excellent overall; minor surface wear consistent with age.
