A Silver-Mounted Cloisonné-Enamel Vase
By Satō, Meiji era
By Satō, Meiji era (late 19th century), circa 1890–1900
Of globular form with a gently tapered neck, the body worked in yūsen-jippō (wired cloisonné) enamels on a glossy jet-black ground, decorated with a sparrow perched upon a flowering cherry branch, flanked by sprays of red chrysanthemums and white plum blossoms, each finely delineated in silver wire with shaded enamels of soft pink, ivory, and russet tones. The vessel mounted with a solid silver rim and foot, the underside finished with a fully silver base engraved with the three-character mark 佐藤製 (Satō sei, “Made by Satō”).
9cm high.
Signed to base: Satō sei.
Provenance: From a private collection, London.
Condition: Excellent overall, the enamels glossy and intact, the silver with minor age patina, no damage or restoration.
