About the Item
An antique Indian Shiva Mukhalingam made from a brass alloy and formed as a human face dating from the 18th century.
The Shiva Mukhalingam has a single face (some come with four or five faces) and is hollow formed as a sheath and is placed over a lingam, a symbol of the Hindu god Shiva. Mukhalingams are used to cover the stone lingam from sight and protect the viewer from any harm that may come from seeing the stone. The cover would be removed for priestly worship of the stone.
The Mukhalingam is well made with good facial definition with some rough elements as is normal to these early examples. He wears a headband, holes for earrings in his ears and has a neatly defined small moustache. The round base is formed from the folded back metal and the Mukhalingam is not marked.
