About the Item
This is an antique Japanese iron articulated Ise-ebi (spiny lobster) sculpture. Judging from the level of craftsmanship and sophistication of its construction, it is believed to date to the Edo period (1800s–1860s). Far from being a simple decorative object, this work represents an exceptionally accomplished piece of metal craftsmanship, embodying the advanced forging techniques and refined aesthetic sensibility of Japan’s traditional armor makers.
A clearly legible “明珍 (Myochin)” signature is present on the underside of the abdomen. Based on this mark, the piece can be definitively attributed to the Myochin school, a distinguished lineage of armorers renowned throughout Japanese history. Originating in the Heian period and serving the shogunate and feudal lords throughout the Edo era, the Myochin family stands among the most important metalworking dynasties in Japan. Over time, they elevated the forging techniques, articulated structures, durability, and refined design developed for functional armor into highly sophisticated works of art for appreciation.
Among the works produced by the Myochin school, articulated representations of the spiny lobster are especially prized. As with armor, movement is fundamental to their construction: each segment of the shell is formed from individual iron plates, joined with rivets to allow natural articulation. The legs, antennae, and tail are all fully three-dimensional, carefully assembled to convey a remarkable sense of tension and vitality, closely resembling a living lobster. When held in the hand, the joints move subtly, and despite being made of iron, the sculpture conveys an almost organic suppleness.
The surface is meticulously worked with fine chiseling and incised lines, evenly applied across the entire body to render the texture and minute irregularities of the shell with extraordinary realism. The aged iron surface—shifting from reddish brown to deep, dark tones—has developed a rich patina over time, lending the piece a depth and quiet authority that only centuries can impart. Rather than flaunting technical virtuosity, the Myochin aesthetic reveals itself in the restrained emphasis on material, structure, and form.
The condition is also exceptional. There are no missing elements or signs of later repairs, and all articulated parts remain intact and functional. For an articulated iron work of this period, such a high degree of preservation is extremely rare, making this an outstanding collector’s piece. With its harmonious balance of form, technique, and condition, this is truly a once-in-a-lifetime example.
Embodying Japan’s armor-making heritage, metalworking excellence, and the spirit of wabi-sabi, this articulated spiny lobster transcends the category of an object, bringing a powerful presence and intellectual depth to any space. The piece will be carefully packed and securely shipped from Japan for safe delivery.
