About the Item

An unusual and elegant Japanese Art Nouveau amphora shaped cloisonne and ginbari foiled vase, Meiji Period, circa 1900, Japan. The vase of amphora form, with a tapering body resting on a narrow foot. A pair of handles join the high shoulders and tall neck. The cupped mouth of floriform. The vase decorated with stylized tendrils of trailing wisteria, all in beautiful cloisonné enamels of various shades of blue, pink, white, black and green. The enamel ground enhanced in the ginbari technique with brightly colored foils of lime green, turquoise, and dark blue. The interior of the vase enameled in a deep green. The vase heavily influence by Art Nouveau designs. The use of ginbari foil seeming to imitate favrile or stained glass.
