About the Item

Bronze turtle with brown patina. In Japan, the turtle (kame) is considered a symbol of wisdom, stability and luck. Tradition has it that it provides protection and 10,000 years of happiness because of its longevity and the slowness of its movements. In Taoist belief, the turtle symbolizes the world: its shell represents the sky, while its body represents the earth. As a symbol of longevity and good fortune in Japan, the turtle is also associated with the Earth. This animal is the subject of many legends, the most well-known of which dates to the Nihon Shoki, a very ancient text about the origins of Japan and its imperial dynasty. The legend of Urashima Taro tells the story of a man who saves a baby turtle. To thank him, the mother of the little survivor invites him to her underwater kingdom.
