About the Item

Japanese Head Bucket (Kubi-Oke), Lacquer, Meiji period. The head bucket was used for storing and transporting severed heads. During the Samurai era clashes and battles ensued, cutting off an enemy's head and offering it as proof is customary. Normally the bucket is constructed of plain wood, this particular one is lacquered with metal fittings and cord. Most probably belonging to a very wealthy and powerful Samurai.
