About the Item

A Marvelous and Quite Large 19th Century South Indian Bronze Dancing Female Figure, Tamil Nadu. This Indian bronze sculpture depicts a dancing female figure. The figure is adorned with jewelry, including earrings, necklaces, and armlets, with incised detailing. Her facial features are stylized with almond-shaped eyes, a prominent nose, and a slight smile. Her hair is arranged in tiered sections, ending in a rounded bun at the back. She stands on a tiered circular base decorated with lotus petal motifs. One foot is raised while the other is firmly planted. The torso is curved, and the dhoti is detailed with decorative borders, loops, and tassels. The arms are bent at the elbows, with hands positioned in symbolic mudras. The surface has developed a green patina from oxidation. Similar bronzes were created in Tamil Nadu for religious and ceremonial purposes. Workshops in the region followed established sculptural traditions, producing figures for temple use through precise metal casting techniques. These bronzes were typically commissioned for devotional practices, adhering to standardized forms that emphasized balance and movement. India, Circa: 19th Century
