About the Item

A large bronze head sculpture of Boddhisatva Guanyin from Qing Dynasty of China circa 19th century. The intact head fragment, likely belonged to a full body statue, was finely cast with intricate details. With sensitively rendered facial expression that reflects compassion and serenity, the Boddhisatva wears a bejeweled crown on her combed and coiffured hair parted in the middle. A seated Buddha in the center of the crown identifies the Boddhisatva as Goddess of Mercy Guanyin. Known as Avalokitesvara in India/Tibet and Kannon in Japan, he is perhaps the most important Boddhisatva widely worshipped across Asian countries for his compassion for the sufferings and salvation power. In China since 12th century, Guanyin was depicted as a female. This statue, cast by lost wax technique, showcases a characteristic style typical of mid to late Qing dynasty. With a full cheek, she has an appearance more akin to her Chinese worshippers. The polished surface shows warm patina and traces of gilt around the neck. Noticeable red polychrome paint remains on the Buddha halo on the crown. The head is displayed on a wonderful dark wood base custom-made with stepped detail. The presentation is impressive. The head itself measures 14"h by 8" by 8" and the pedestal measures 14.25"h. The head is not fixed to the base and can be taken off for easier shipping.
