About the Item

This large and impressive polished brass jardiere or twin handled urn is highly decorative. It is hand worked in reclaimed sheet brass which originally came from some large German brass object and the words made in Germany are still visible within its decorated rim. Metal was difficult to obtain at this period in India. The large bulbous body rises to a smaller neck with a flared and fluted rim. And to each side, there is an elephant mask head ring handle. The whole of the body is hand worked with intricate foliate boarders and a continuous central scene of numerous animals amongst trees and foliage. This artistic work is highly skilled and all produced free hand into the sheet metal with punches and chisels working from the front and the back to produce the ornate deep relief decoration This decorative large Raj period Jardinière is in good original condition.
