About the Item

A Large Pair of Japanese Cloisonne Enamel Lanterns Attributed to Hayashi Kodenji, Edo Period, 19th century Japanese cloisonne lanterns were made during the Meiji period, from the late 19th to early 20th century, and were often used as decorative lighting fixtures in temples and shrines. The harmonious balance of color and precision of wirework exemplify Kodenji’s mastery of the Meiji period, capturing both the technical sophistication and lyrical beauty for which Japanese cloisonné became celebrated worldwide. These lanterns reflect the height of Nagoya enamel production and the serene elegance that defines Kodenji’s finest works. Hayashi Kodenji was one of Japan’s preeminent Meiji-era cloisonné enamel artists, working in Nagoya—a leading center of innovation and craftsmanship. Renowned for his delicate silver wirework and luminous transparent enamels, Kodenji achieved an extraordinary clarity and refinement that distinguished his work from his contemporaries. His artistry earned international acclaim, with examples now housed in major museums worldwide, including the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Ashmolean Museum, and the Tokyo National Museum.
