About the Item
This extremely fine late 19th century large Indian Raj period charger is made from heavy gauge brass, which is extensively hand decorated with exceptionally fine applied radial panels and borders worked in sheet copper and decorated with traditional scenes with dancing figures and deities, finished with raised beaded borders and separated with foliate leaf designs.
The large central circular panel is a wonderfully detailed scene showing a ceremonial group of figures wearing elaborate costumes gathered under a tree.
This unusually large charger is in excellent original condition and displays a lovely dark-toned colour and patina.
On the reverse, there is a brass wire loop for hanging.
This type of repousse work is completely hand-done. The method is raising and punching the decoration from the front and back of sheet metal, which is sometimes in silver. Then, adding the fine detailing with hand engraving and chasing. This is a highly skilled type of artwork which is very time-consuming to produce, originating mainly from South India, from a region called Tanjore ( Thanjavur).
