About the Item

A superb and important pair of Japanese Meiji period cloisonne enamel plates, each executed with remarkable refinement and a level of wire work and color control associated only with the top ateliers of the late nineteenth century. The plates present two distinct naturalistic scenes. One displays elegant cranes standing beside a reflective pond surrounded by chrysanthemums and flowering branches. The other shows a pheasant along a wooded bank with richly layered foliage and blossoms. Both compositions unfold against a luminous turquoise ground that heightens the depth and clarity of the enamel work. The borders are exceptionally complex and showcase an intricate sequence of stylized floral cartouches, scroll elements and multicolor cloisonne motifs arranged with perfect balance. The quality of the wire work is outstanding. It is dense, controlled and highly detailed which indicates the hand of a master craftsman. What sets this pair apart and elevates them into a higher category of Meiji enamel artistry is the presence of fully decorated backs. Both plates feature a continuous turquoise ground embellished with repeating white floral medallions and fine curling foliate patterns. Backs of this type are rare and appear only on the finest examples intended for high ranking patrons or for export to elite collectors. The presence of fully finished reverse sides is a strong indicator of workshop pride and elevated production value. Condition is very good with no major losses. The enamel retains strong color and clarity and both plates display beautifully. A truly exceptional pair of Meiji cloisonne plates. Rare as a matched pair and rarer still with backs executed to this level. Ideal for an advanced collector or for a refined interior seeking pieces with significant artistic merit.
