Early Meiji Japanese cloisonne enamel charger measuring 15 inches in diameter, depicting the famous folktale of Urashima Taro. Shown riding a red sea bream across stylized waves, the figure is surrounded by swirling currents, bubbles, and underwater forms that reference the legendary Dragon Palace beneath the sea.
The plate displays a bold narrative style associated with early Meiji enamel work, with thick wire outlines, strong color fields, and rich sea greens and blues. Examples with mythological subjects are uncommon, and the present charger offers a rare interpretation of one of Japan’s oldest stories. A strong piece for collectors of Japanese narrative art and Meiji decorative arts.

The Story Depicted on the Charger
The figure shown is Urashima Tarō, a fisherman who saves a turtle and is taken to the Dragon Palace (Ryūgū-jō) under the sea. As he arrives at the palace, he is traditionally shown riding a tai fish (red sea bream) over waves, surrounded by bubbles and undersea motifs.

Urashima Tarō (浦島 太郎?) is a Japanese legend about a fisherman who holds a fishing pole and rescues a turtle and is rewarded for this with a visit to Ryūgū-jō, the palace of Ryūjin, the Dragon God, under the sea. He stays there for three days and upon his return to his village, finds himself 300 years in the future.

Chinese Cloisonné Charger or Large Plate fine detail, Mid-19th Century

This is a very good Chinese Cloisonné Charger or Large Plate / Dish that we date to the mid-19th century of the Qing dynasty, Circa 1970.
The Charger is circular on a low foot.
The decoration shows a large central 12-lobed flower head with further flowers and leaves off it, leading to a three section pattern with three mythical phoenix, all in many different coloured enamels against a deep red ground. The outer rim has a detailed plantain leaf border decoration.
The reverse has an unmarked green base with three roundel designs on the rim, all against a blue ground.
Overall a very decorative 19th C Qing period Chinese Plate.
