About the Item
A fine and impressive Nepalese gilt copper filigree votive plaque inset with coral, turquoise, and colored glass "gems", 19th/20th century, Nepal.
This large votive plaque would originally have been used in a household shrine as an object of veneration and meditation. Three crowned deities adorn the center of the plaque. The center figure with a body and face of coral. The flanking figures with bodies and faces of green glass. The deities stand within arched niches upon a tall throne platform supported by four lions worked in repousse. Fantastic gilt copper filigree and more glass "gems" fill in the surround.
Although there are no identifying attributes, based on the five pointed crowns, we can infer they are Buddhist, rather than Hindu in nature. Based on the colors of the bodies, it is most likely that the central figure represents Padmapani Avalokiteshvara, the Lotus Bearer and Bodhisattva of Compassion. The two figures flanking him most likely portray Green Tara and Bhrikuti, both Bodhisattvas in their own right, and associated with Wisdom and Compassion.
Framed in a thick, later 20th century wood frame.
