About the Item

Nepalese-Tibetan sculpture of Ganesha. A splendid Hindu religious bronze sculpture of a dancing Ganesha of Tibetan or Nepalese origin, created back in the 19th century circa 1850. This statue is similar to the Chola style, highly detailed with ornaments and was crafted in solid casted bronze with beautiful patina. The distinctive patina of the piece is particularly delightful. Ganesha is the elephant headed son of Shiva. He holds his broken tusk in the right hand and a bowl of sweetmeats in another hand, dancing on a round base which is surmounted on a squared base. He also holds an axe and noose. His trunk is pointing to the left and pays an obeisance to Goddess Parvati and invokes her blessings in the home. It brings about family bonding and happiness. Behind Ganesha sits an aureole or circle of light. This represents his divinity. Similar to Krishna Ganesha celebrates life through it's pleasures and beauty. Whilst an elephant-headed deity wielding a weapon, axe or lasso may inspire images of a belligerent warhead, rest assured these items represent something far more encouraging. Instead, these instruments are rooted in metaphor and promote the idea that we should cut away the obstacles before us. In destroying our vices and obstacles, be they certain hurdles in our lives or more abstract feelings such as jealousy and anger, we can source new beginnings and cultivate a new approach to the things that have been worrying us. This rare vessel was created in red bronze during the Song Dynasty period. between 960/1279 AD. This is one of the most unusual forms of red bronze jar. A large vessel, the sides are virtually perpendicular to the base. The stepped lid design is also among the more rare types. The predominant lid design among the Yunnan offering bronzes is the "wheel" pattern, with a few lids having the lotus design.
