About the Item

This exceptional pair of Japanese cloisonné enamel dishes, each measuring approximately 12 inches in diameter, dates to the Meiji period, circa 1880 to 1890, and represents cloisonné work of notably high quality. The central medallions depict ducks shown in flight, landing, and wading among softly rendered reeds, with careful attention paid to movement, proportion, and naturalistic detail. The birds are finely outlined in delicate wirework and filled with subtly shaded enamels that give depth and liveliness to the scene. The central imagery is set against a finely crackled white ground, gently washed with pale turquoise tones that suggest water and atmosphere without heavy outlining. This restrained use of color enhances the sense of openness and refinement, allowing the ducks and reeds to remain the visual focus. The enamel surfaces are smooth and evenly fired, demonstrating a high level of technical control. Surrounding the central panels is a wide and intricately decorated border executed in a rare pastel color palette. The border features scrolling foliage and stylized floral motifs in soft tones of powder blue, pale yellow, muted green, lavender, and light pink, carefully balanced against darker outlines. The pastel coloration is unusual for Meiji period cloisonné and reflects a sophisticated decorative sensibility more often associated with top-tier workshops. Both dishes are preserved in mint condition, with no chips, cracks, restorations, or enamel losses. The surfaces retain their original luster and clarity, and the wirework remains crisp throughout. As a matched pair, they present with exceptional visual harmony and are well suited for an advanced private collection or institutional decorative arts display.
