This finely matched pair of Japanese cloisonné enamel dishes, each measuring approximately 8½ inches in diameter, dates to the Meiji period, circa 1880 to 1890, and is attributed to the Goto School, renowned for its refined naturalistic compositions and exceptional technical control. Each dish is centered with a dramatic lotus leaf composition set against a deep black ground, creating strong contrast and visual depth.
The central fields depict large, overlapping lotus leaves in graduated tones of gold, olive green, and soft brown, their surfaces intentionally pierced and weathered to suggest late summer decay. Slender lotus stems, seed pods, and curling grasses weave through the composition, animated by delicately rendered insects including dragonflies and butterflies shown in flight. The insects are drawn with remarkable precision, featuring fine wing veining, segmented bodies, and subtle enamel shading that conveys lightness and movement.
Surrounding the central scene is a wide and highly elaborate border executed in dense polychrome cloisonné. This border incorporates a rich tapestry of geometric motifs, stylized floral forms, maple leaves, grape clusters, and abstract patterns, all set against a warm red ground accented with turquoise, cobalt blue, white, yellow, and black enamels. The complexity of the border work, combined with the controlled balance of color, reflects the high level of planning and execution associated with Goto School production.
The reverse sides continue the decorative program with complementary patterned borders, underscoring the care given to all visible surfaces.
