About the Item

A dark patinated bronze okimono of exceptional quality, depicting the study of a powerful roaring tiger, signed Maruki Company and Atsuyoshi. The animal is shown with hind legs bent, tail raised and curved at the tip, and the body set diagonally, culminating in the head thrust upwards. The wide-open jaws reveal the teeth, while the whiskers are rendered in relief. The sculpture is signed under the belly with the mark of the Maruki Company and the name of the engraver Atsuyoshi. Atsuyoshi is known for his finely modeled bronze studies of animals and worked for the Maruki Company, active in Japan during the Meiji period (1868-1912), regarded among the finest producers of Japanese bronzes for the quality, refinement, and notable weight of their works.
