About the Item

This unusual bronze sculpture is a 19th-century dorje, or vajra, a scepter used during Tibetan Buddhist ritual recitation. Translated as thunderbolt or diamond, the dorje symbolizes that which is invincible and enduring and is a ritual weapon of several figures in Tantric iconography. A conduit for energy, the dorje is characterized by a small sphere at the center of the handle, representing the underlying nature of the universe, and two ribbed, spherical ends of multiple prongs, each emerging from a lotus blossom.
